the seasons of art

A small group tour through Here is Every, a exhibition in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. 40 years of modern art is the subtitle, so I ran to it, writing a book on the last 50 years of seasonality in timeframes. And found more than enough new evidence for my theory. Some artists even used phrases that fit my theory exactly, ranging from the 'personal growth for all' cultural summer (1971-1977), during which Bruce Nauman made a piece that pictures the oval circles of the world, combined with a text line like: "the need within me to stretch myself to a certain point". Yes, Bruce, that's a good summer-quote! But after everyone is stretching themselves, we enter eachother's 'bubble' and that leads to polarization and cultural autumn. At the end of the seventies, a lot of artist become insecure, making art that's not finished, that's partly not visible, and has, more often than not, (symbolic) death as a theme. The despair of autumn, you might call it, with it's sense of memento mori. Victor Grippo's work in the 1980s is a nice example, if you can read the text (will grow bigger if you click on it).. Eighties art is either rather reflective, introvert, or 'poppy', just like cultural winter predicts. And then, yes, really, things open up again and artist find new techniques, dive deeply into interactive art and a new optimism. But then it's the nineties and cultural spring again. Ah well, you will understand once you've read the book. Have patience and faith.

A meet with Philo

Had drinks with an old colleague of mine, Philo, who now lives and works in NYC. It was interesting to hear about her experience with the American culture. She loved her work here, but said there were clear differences. Example: she's pregnant and pregnant women keep working until the last day of their pregnancy, if they can't afford leave without pay. Women rush to the hospital from behind their desk and are back at it after a month. Talk about work ethics. But they have to, because the work culture is very opportunistic and short term, in America, she found out. She also mentioned the hierarchy in work relations and the American need for structure: if she won't state exactly what she wants to get done, it won't get done. Where in Holland everyone wants to know what the long term company goal is, so they can work towards it, most Americans want to know what they have to do day by day. This means a lot of talk about the end goals in Holland, but also a lot of meetings about the daily process in America. It also shows in daily behavior: so much more daily things are regulated in New York. The government tells you what to do and what not to do much more often than in Holland. On the other hand: what's not regulated, is 'free-for-all' terrain. Yes, we noticed, looking at the financial institutions. And on the sideway: paper to be recycled is placed in huge plastic (!) bags on the sideway. One of those huge bags was filled with no more than 2 pizzaboxes and an empty shoebox..
The American culture is more extreme, it's always flips from the front of the coin to the back, while the Dutch often end up with a very broad in-between area: we keep balancing on the side. Cultural differences, they keep popping up, shame they are still so little studied in day to day business.

from holy war to bull shitcl

New York. This weekend we visited the Guggenheim for photos of Mapplethorpe, but got Louise Bourgeois instead, the 96 year old artist, most famous for her enormous metal spiders, but this great retrospective showed that she has made expressive art since the sixties. Interesting. Just like the art tour we did, joining a group for 8 shows that ran in the Chelsea district. Interesting concept; go figure: 65 people, each paying 20 dollar to get some background on the shows. Worth it, though the man guiding could have dived deeper than the most basic information for his 1300 dollar walk of two hours. But he selected 8 good shows. We started with photographer-turned-artist David Lachapelle, who creates enormous tableaus in Hollywood luxury dream style but then with clashing story lines. In his biggest piece, Holy War, sexy soldiers are lying about, but with severe wounds or their legs torn off, while on the other side of the picture sheep are happily grazing. A bit heavy on the message, but beautifully done. We ended with famous artist Andres Serrano, who propelled himself into stardom with his Piss Christ in 1989: a crucifix dumped into a glass of his own urine. So shocking in those days that it caused the government to withdraw funding of several arts projects. I used his case in my book as an example of art on the threshold between winter and spring cultural periods. In the nineties he exhibited photographs in Groningen, among which a fistfucking scene and a woman drinking urine, that did not nearly cause as much upheaval, since by then culture had caught up with Serrano. I thought he was well past his date, but he has a new show that seems to shock again. I can't see why: I found it a little boring and predictable. This time, he has taken to photographing pure shit. And I mean that literally. Excrements of several animals and people. And the boring part: yes there was bull shit and yes, there was excrement of a priest too (title: holy shit). Our guide was enthusiastic, stressing the taboo subject of excrements. But is it that taboo? I did not find it very creative (hasn't someone done that better, long ago?). Anyway, it was a trip from holy war to holy shit. And I do think David Lachapelle reflects our timeframe better than Andreas Serrano. But a new spring in art they both do not represent. Will keep looking for that.

Jeff Koons is back..

Jef Koons, de icoon van de kunstenaarswereld eind jaren tachtig, staat weer helemaal in de belangstelling. Zijn tot enorme proporties opgeblazen "ballonnenhondje" staat op het dak van een museum in New York, hij mag als eerste levende kunstenaar een tentoonstelling inrichten in Versailles, en ook in Chicago komt een overzichtstentoonstelling. "It's Koons-time", schrijft de Volkskrant vandaag. "...maar hoe komt dat? En waarom nu? En wat heeft hij, de meest oppervlakkige van alle kunstenaars, toch dat beklijft?" Het zat er al even langzaam aan te komen, meldt de krant. Ja, logisch. Het is weer volop winter in de cultuur, en Koons werd groot tijdens de vorige winter. Zijn werk raakt opnieuw een snaar bij mensen. Simpel, happy-go-lucky, op de rand van kitsch. Ook toen al was men verbaasd, en soms ook boos, bijvoorbeeld toen het Stedelijk Museum Ushering in Banality aanschafte, een manshoog schoorsteenbeeldje van een varkentje dat voortgeduwd wordt door engeltjes. Ach hoe mooi volgt de realiteit de theorie. Nog een keer de Volkskrant: In de jaren negentig, de jaren van de sociaal betrokken kunst en de relational aesthetics, waarbij het publiek het liefst moest meedoen aan het kunstwerk, stonden Koons spiegelbeelden er te opzichtig leeghoofdig bij, als een souvenir van de narcistische jaren '80" Hoef ik niks aan toe te voegen. Jeff Koons is een winterkunstenaar.

winterse afrekening met de herfst van tachtig

Nu de winterse tijdgeest in 'full flow' is, beginnen steeds meer mensen in mijn omgeving voorzichtig vragen te stellen: 'dat met die Duyvendak, hoe past dat nou in je theorie..?' Nou, dat past heel goed. Moet volgens velen nu het boek snel afschrijven: terugblikken is nog steeds actueel.. Ik heb helaas de eerste uitzending van het nieuwe programma van Max Westerman nog niet gezien, gisteravond, maar in een introductie laat ook hij de winterse tijdgeest in Nederland in vogelvlucht zien: allerlei krantenberichten over achtereenvolgens het verbieden van kraken, het sluiten van bordelen, zero tolerance at dance parties, en nog veel meer zien. Reflectie, grenzen stellen, afrekenen, normen en waarden verankeren, het zijn belangrijke aspecten van de winter-tijdgeest. Ik zelf vind ook de discussie die de Volkskrant nu al wekenlang op de nationale agenda plaatst interessant. Een paar dagen geleden alweer plaatsten ze een bericht over hoe de vakbond om moet gaan met zijn pensioeninvesteringen, die via opkoopfondsen renderen. Alleen zorgen die opkoopfondsen voor het uitmelken van dezelfde bedrijven waar hun leden hun dagelijkse brood moeten verdienen. Interessant winters-ethisch dilemma. En net als het kraakfenomeen zijn ook de opkoopfondsen groot geworden in de herfstperiode van begin jaren tachtig. In mijn boek behandel ik krakers en yuppen dan ook naast elkaar, als twee kanten van dezelfde medaille. Beiden leven van anarchie, het creeren van een eigen wereld, zich duidelijk onderscheiden en afsluiten van andere groepen. Extremen raken elkaar, omdat ze vanuit dezelfde tijdgeest ontstaan zijn. Grappig is dat nu ook de extremen van Rita Verdonk elkaar blijken te raken: in de jaren tachtig blijkt ze ook nog weggesleept te zijn bij een krakersdemonstratie. Nu wil ze kraken verbieden. Ach ja, die winter. Ik ben al blij dat het herfst-karakter van Geert Wilders over zijn hoogtepunt heen lijkt te zijn. Misschien dat we zijn acties over twintig jaar dan nog eens tegen het daglicht kunnen houden?
