Gisteren bij de begrafenis van Charles Lücker geweest. Indrukwekkend. We zwommen in 2001 en 2002 in dezelfde baan en vervolgens ook samen estafettes in Sydney. Pas na een tijdje kwam ik erachter dat de licht verlegen Charles een ‘in Amsterdam wereldberoemd’ alter ego had: Vera Springveer. Nu hou ik niet van mannen die denken dat ze instant leuk zijn zodra ze een jurk aantrekken; ik heb tijden geweigerd naar playbackende travestieten te kijken. Vera was echter een klasse apart, (misschien samen met Dolly Bellefleur). Charles was niet zomaar een travestiet, maar veeleer een uitstekende performer met een stem als een klok.
Hij was de enige man bij Girls Wanna Have Fun (een vrouwengroep met onder andere Frederique Spigt, de zusjes Klemann (Lois Lane) en oud-Bombita Robbie Smits). Mannelijke ambitie die zich omtoverde in een showstelende diva, zo omschreef Monique Klemann hem tijdens de uitvaartdienst: ‘Naast Charles voelde ik me altijd een beetje een zingende huisvrouw’. Ikzelf vond hem op zijn best in ‘the Days of Ziggy Stardust’, waarin hij nummers van David Bowie deed. Wellicht nog extravaganter dan de Vera Springveer shows, maar gek genoeg is het geen travestie wanneer je geen jurk aanhebt. Een kippenvel show.
Je bent echt goed wanneer je door performance en stem extra diepgang geeft aan Bowie-nummers. Nu is Charles overleden, aan de gevolgen van aids: het kan nog. En dat nu steekt me zo. De Nederlandse cultuur heeft zijn extravagantie hard nodig, misschien wat minder tijdens deze culturele winter, maar zeker over een jaar of twee, als we weer aan een lente toe zijn. Vernieuwing komt vanuit de flanken van de maatschappij. En die moeten we dus koesteren. Ik had Charles graag een doorbraak zien maken en Nederland het plezier gegund. Nu moeten we het doen met wat flarden op YouTube en een dvd.
